Introduction

A number of important advances have been made in the areas of pain assessment and treatment. This has resulted because of a paradigm shift away from the traditional, but overly simplistic, biomedical reductionistic approach to medical disorders, to the more practical and comprehensive biopsychosocial perspective.
In this program, Dr. Gatchel will provide state of the art information about evidence-based biopsychosocial methods of pain assessment and management. He will also provide the nuts and bolts, practical, clinical guidance required to administer these methods. This program will be relevant and of interest to a variety of health care professionals (including psychologists, social workers, nurses, case managers, and psychiatrists) regardless of the number of patients they see who have pain.

Participants will better understand:

  • The biopsychosocial approach to the etiology, assessment and management of pain disorders
  • The major psychological approaches to pain management and how to administer them
  • The step-care framework to pain management
  • The integration of psychopharmacology in pain management
